IoT and opportunities in the maritime sector
How can IoT and sensors streamline operations?
Soolo participated in September at the Forum for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in Aalesund. Many people came to learn more about how sensors and IoT can be used in the maritime sector. Soolo presented and demonstrated various sensors. The information the sensors provide can provide major benefits, savings and contribute to more efficient operations. The agenda at the seminar was to highlight, among other things:
- How to benefit from IoT on ships?
- What options are there when coverage is not available?
IoT on ships
The use of new technology on ships is often hindered by the problems associated with poor or no coverage. The boats travel in areas without coverage and there are often high costs associated with roaming far from the mainland. The sensors from Soolo have their own SIM card and Soolo Master supports NB-IoT and LTE-M as data carriers in the telecommunications network. The developers who created and are constantly developing Soolo can adapt a number of wishes from you as an end user.
The steel construction of a ship can also present challenges for coverage. Soolo is designed to be able to send signals even in poor conditions. The range is one of the things that sets us apart from the competition. Even if the tanks are located below sea level and in rooms with thick steel walls, Soolo can be used.
Reporting and efficient operation
In the app you always have an overview. You can get monthly reports on your filling and emptying pattern that show in black and white where there are areas for improvement. You get statistics on how many liters you used, how much and how often the various tanks were filled. The average filling compared to the capacity of the tank is calculated. It is then easy to see if a tank of, for example, 10,000 liters has been filled five times, but only 12,000 liters has been used during the month. It clearly shows that here it would have been more than enough with two fillings and it would have lasted for up to several weeks more. Then you could save both costs, time and emissions in connection with transport. Soolo is an investment that is quickly earned. Increase efficiency, reduce costs, avoid downtime and empty tanks with Soolo
Always in control – always enough left in the tank
On board ships there are a number of different tanks with different contents. Here it is important that there is enough left for the entire trip, both when it comes to oil, fuel, fresh water, etc. The collection tanks should not be too full. The sensors from Soolo are waterproof and can withstand most types of liquids. In the Soolo app you can see the contents in real time. Then you can see if there is a need to empty at the next opportunity, or if you can handle the next stage as well. With Soolo you always know how much is left in the tank. The control it provides reduces the number of fillings or emptyings. Switch to only emptying and filling when needed! You can also be sure that you will never run out.
Multiple applications on board ships
Soolo Master is the "central" of the IoT system of Soolo. Here you can mount various sensors that measure different things. We have previously highlighted tank measurement, but there are a number of other areas of use. We have sensors that can notify you of temperature changes. The distance sensor can send you a notification by email or SMS if a door or gate is open. Both parts can prevent damage to goods or materials. For example, electronics or machines that cannot tolerate moisture, salt water or that are damaged if it gets too hot or cold where they are stored. There are also many exciting opportunities under development.
